Powday Report

A look at the Week’s Winners & Next Week’s Place to Be

We’re Back!

If you are fortunate to live in Northern Vermont, New York, or New Hampshire, you’ve been basking in the glory of ideal weather conditions.

The best snow scenario (in my humble opinion) is a constant day after day of a few inches of accumulation.  This is especially true after a substantial base has been developed.  After living in the Sierras where you would get feet of snow day after day, believe me when I say, less is better.

Last week places like the European Alps enjoyed some stellar conditions and this coming week I am jealous of those who frequent Northern Colorado resorts like Winter Park and Steamboat.

Courchevel, France

Let’s talk glitz and glam at Courchevel.  For those who have the money and time, it’s a luxury winter vacation you’ll want to experience.  You can find all sorts of upscale lodging, including catered villas.  Of course, the resort is actually made up of 5 different villages, so if Courchevel 1850 village is too ritzy, you could try nearby La Tania. As for food and drinks, you won’t find it difficult to find Michelin star rated restaurants with great views.

Let’s talk skiing and snowboarding terrain.  This place is massive, especially if you buy the 3 valleys pass.  Everything is in metric, so just trust me, it’s a lot. 600km of the lift serviced terrain.  Off piste is a whole other world.  A backcountry playground you probably want to hire a guide to explore.

Next Week’s Powder

Steamboat Resort is made for powder hounds.  Warren Miller used to love this resort.  It’s Americana at its finest.  The western town stirs up images of Calamity Jane and Wild Bill Hickock. Saloons are now alongside microbreweries and topnotch restaurants.  You can buy fancy cowboy boots and custom bucket hats.

The mountain itself is a wonderland of perfect glades, wide swaths of trails filled with light powdery snow, and plenty of fun for the whole family.  Billy the Kid established a stellar learning program.  This is the most authentically western American place I can imagine.

In fact, this Monday is the 50th running of the Cowboy Downhill! Go check it out!

And as always, I would be even happier to help you plan your own vacation to any of these destinations.
